"The Clash of ideas:he Ideological Battles that Made the Modern World, and Will Shape the Future",  is a collection of carefully curated essays that trace the great debates that defined the twentieth century as they played out in the pages of Foreign Affairs. Commemorating the magazine's 90th anniversary, this intellectual history charts the rise of fascism and communism and the emergence of the liberal postwar order, as well as the struggle between the principles of capitalism and the ideals of democracy.

Editor Gideon Rose tells the narrative through work from luminaries such as Isaiah Berlin, Victor Chernov, G. John Ikenberry, Harold Laski, and Leon Trotsky. Rose argues that "the major battles about how to structure modern politics and economics were fought in the first half of the last century and . . . ended with the emergence of the most successful system the world has ever seen"--liberal democracy.
